The radioactive material transport business is constantly in motion. Regulations are continuously being evaluated and tweaked, and companies need to keep pace to know how the changes affect them. Regulators experience personnel turnover, which sometimes results in the same regulations being interpreted differently.

New packagings are being developed that must be analyzed, tested, and licensed.

Existing package approvals and validations must be renewed every five years. Packagings must be relicensed when safety cases are revised due to design modifications, or to accommodate new contents. Or, suppliers must license packages in new countries, to go where they have not gone before.

And, in the midst of all this, up-to-date, job-appropriate training is needed for every hazmat employee who enters the work force, changes jobs, or needs recurrent training.

The goal at NKENT CONSULTING is to provide expert consulting and training services to help customers succeed in all aspects of their radioactive material transport program.

Norman Kent is the owner of NKENT CONSULTING, based in Columbia, South Carolina, USA. Mr. Kent has over 26 years experience in the commercial nuclear fuel industry. He earned a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1990 and began his career in criticality safety engineering with Westinghouse Nuclear Fuels.

In the late 1990's, Mr. Kent transitioned into the world of radioactive material transport, helping to form, and then manage, the Westinghouse Transport Licensing, Compliance, and Package Technology (LCPT) group. in this capacity he oversaw the development and introduction of Westinghouse’s new PWR shipping package, Traveller.

In 2011, Mr. Kent left Westinghouse and joined Daher-TLI, where he assisted in forming TLI’s Engineering Services Group.

In 2016, he left Daher-TLI and began NKENT CONSULTING LLC.

Mr. Kent is a retired U.S. Navy officer, having served in the U.S. submarine force.

He is a member of the American Nuclear Society (ANS), the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM), the World Nuclear Association (WNA), and the ANSI N14.1 subcommittee. He was active for many years with the World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI), which included serving a term as chair of the SSR-6 Working Group.
